Kay Fan, also goes by Kevin, discovered his passion for music at a very young age. Born in Taiwan and raised for a time in South Africa, he recalls listening to ’90s hip-hop and pop cassette tapes borrowed from friends, while creating his own dance moves—moves he was often too shy to show his parents or friends.
After moving back to Taiwan around middle school, he began learning hip-hop dance at a local studio near his dad’s office and also took up piano lessons. With influences ranging from dance and piano to hip-hop and pop, he developed a diverse musical foundation from an early age.
Fast-forward to his middle school, high school, and college years, when Kay Fan was living in Kansas and the Kansas City, Missouri area. During this time, he began learning Pro Tools and Native Instruments software and started producing his own beats. Inspired by DJs he heard on FM radio on the weekends, as well as international DJs performing at festivals and on BBC radio shows, he became increasingly fascinated by the art of DJing. Eventually, he purchased his first DJ setup and began teaching himself how to mix and DJ.
Since 2013, Kay Fan has been a full-time DJ, performing at bars, clubs, lounges, weddings, and private events throughout the local scene. Along the way, he has continually pushed himself to improve his craft, surrounding himself with local DJs, mentors, and fellow music lovers who share his passion and taste for music.
Everything changed when he connected with a mentor based in Chicago through a record purchase on Discogs in early 2019. That relationship opened the door to a deeper love for ’90s and 2000s house music, which eventually led him to explore the sounds of ’70s and ’80s disco, funk, and soul. What began as a simple curiosity quickly became an obsession. Since then, Kay Fan has continued to dig for records, discover new sounds, and expand his musical journey—one record at a time.
